Women choose breast augmentation surgery in Boston because they desire a larger breast size and more balanced body proportions. Breast augmentation has become incredibly popular in the United States; nearly 300,000 women chose to undergo breast augmentation surgery last year, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.

At our Boston area plastic surgery practice, Dr. Howrigan offers breast augmentation surgery using either saline or silicone gel-filled breast implants.  The breast surgery procedure requires about 1-2 hours under general anesthesia.

Breast Augmentation: Is It Right for You?

Breast augmentation in Boston and Newton areas is primarily chosen by women who are dissatisfied with a small breast size. By enlarging the breasts, you can achieve a more shapely, feminine and balanced body proportion. In some cases, the surgery may also be performed for corrective or restorative reasons.  Such indications include breast asymmetry or loss of breast fullness due to aging, weight loss or mastectomy.

If you’re seriously considering breast augmentation surgery in Boston, you should be:

  • A healthy non-smoker
  • Motivated only by your personal appearance goals
  • Capable of understanding the risks and benefits involved
  • Prepared for the possibility of future breast revision surgery

Dr. Howrigan can discuss the many details of abreast augmentation procedure during a consultation, so you can make an educated decision about this breast augmentation surgery.

Options for Breast Augmentation in Boston

Saline or silicone breast implants may be used, depending on your preferences and the surgical technique chosen by Dr. Howrigan. Although saline breast implants remain the most common choice in breast augmentation surgery, silicone gel is gaining appeal because it closely mimics the feel of natural breast tissue.

Implant size varies, typically from 200-600 ml. A proportionate augmentation will be balanced with your body shape, but your preferences will largely dictate the specific implant size that is right for you.

Sub-muscular or sub-glandular breast implant placement can be performed, meaning your breast implants can be placed above or below the muscles of your chest. Partial sub-muscular placement is another technique that’s becoming more popular. Boston plastic surgeon Dr. Howrigan will evaluate your body type and make a recommendation for a particular method of implant placement.

Incision locations may include the breast crease, underarm or areola.  The breast crease (inframammary fold) is the most common incision area.  If you prefer that the surgery scars to be located away from the breast, Dr. Howrigan may recommend an underarm incision.

What to Expect During Breast Augmentation Surgery in Boston

Breast augmentation in Boston is performed with the patient under general anesthesia, so you’ll sleep through the operation. After thoroughly cleansing and then marking the area, Dr. Howrigan makes the agreed upon surgical incisions. The breast tissue is lifted to create a pocket for each implant. The breast implants are then inserted symmetrically below the nipples. Dr. Howrigan closes the incisions with sutures, covering them with skin adhesive or surgical tape.

After breast surgery, you will likely feel sore and tired, but Dr. Howrigan may advise you to walk around within 24 hours. A special bra is provided for you to wear during recovery. Although you may feel normal in less time, expect about 1-2 weeks of downtime after your breast augmentation.
